Episode 5: Delivering Against the Odds: Creating Resilient Healthcare Systems - A Post-Election Commentary

Since the dissolution of Parliament on August 15, 2021, the federal election was framed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a “referendum on Canada’s post-pandemic recovery”. Across the country, health leaders are trying to balance responding to the fourth wave of COVID-19, while simultaneously navigating the impacts of over a year of system disruption.

Canada’s health care system has been a topline issue for both political leaders and voters. Health commitments were made across the political party campaigns, for pandemic preparedness, pharmacare, biopharmaceutical strategy, and virtual care, to name just a few.

On Monday, September 20th, when we first got the news that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be returning to office, we asked the diverse members of RHC to send in their top piece of advice to the Prime Minister and his team on how they can leverage this opportunity to ensure Canadian health systems can not only recover from COVID-19, but be even resilient than they were before the pandemic.

We received a truly impressive and diverse array of recommendations, covering topics from health equity and access to care, to enhancing research & development, improving health data, and accelerating access to innovations.
