Post-Covid Health System Resilience: Harvard Business School Club of Toronto Event

COVID-19 has both exposed and exacerbated the most fragile aspects of our healthcare system. From testing and treatment delays for patients and ballooning surgical wait times to intensifying mental health challenges and insufficient and antiquated supplies of PPE, the pandemic has significantly impacted the health of Canadians and Americans; both directly and indirectly.

This once-in-a century health crisis has led to an equally devastating economic crisis. The opportunity now is for Canada to focus on building stronger, more resilient health systems by better predicting and preventing disease, as well as focusing on achieving better health outcomes.

As the shared effort to overcome this public health crisis accelerates, a global conversation is emerging concerning the need to build more resilient healthcare systems and the role those systems play in broader economic recovery.

The HBS Club of Toronto, HBS Healthcare Alumni Association and Harvard Alumni in Healthcare, in collaboration with other organizations, hosted a panel discussion about post-COVID health system resilience from the Canadian viewpoint.

Speakers provided insights from biotech, patient advocacy, physician/provider and pharmacy perspectives.

  • Brian Heath, Vice President & General Manager Amgen Canada Inc.

  • Barry Stein, President, Colorectal Cancer Canada

  • Sandra Hanna, CEO, Neighbourhood Pharmacies Association of Canada

  • Dr. Calvin Law, Chief of the Odette Cancer Centre, Sunnybrook
